We’ll talk about ways to detect and monitor these calls, with the possibility of someday watching real-time, continent-wide songbird migration via the internet. This amazing phenomenon may turn YOU into a “night owl”!

Join night owls Bill Evans and Harold Mills for a lively Science Cabaret discussion about this nighttime phenomenon. Bill Evans is an ornithologist and naturalist who focuses on night migration, and ways to mitigate bird collisions with cell towers and wind turbines. Harold Mills is a computer programmer, birder, and musician who has a lifelong fascination with sound.

Imagine biologically inspired robots, robots painting Impressionism-inspired portraits, and robots that lose one leg and can learn to walk again. In research that focuses primarily on engineering challenges, such as machine self-replication and programmable self-assembly, the Creative Machines Lab at Cornell University is looking at self-organization and evolutionary phenomena to develop machines that can create and are creative. The Lab’s work is inspired by the natural sciences, as they seek new biological concepts for engineering and new engineering insights into biology.

Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks, and the Hidden Powers of the Mind

The festivities begin at 6:30 pm on Friday, February 17, at the upstairs space at Lot 10 Kitchen & Lounge (formerly Delilah’s) at 112 S. Cayuga Street. Ithaca’s own dj laika will apply her love of science and music to create a boundary-busting multimedia set.

At 7:30 pm, join New York-based magician, physicist, and author Alex Stone for “Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks, and the Hidden Powers of the Mind,” a special Winter Recess edition of Ithaca’s celebrated Science Cabaret. Drinks and light snacks will be available for both shows.
